Richard Anthony Calabro, of Green Valley, Arizona, died peacefully, at the age of 83, on February 7, 2025, after a brief illness. He was in the company of family when he passed away at Haven Health in Green Valley, AZ. Loving husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend, Richard will be missed immeasurably, and remembered always for his kindness, generosity, and adventurous spirit.

Born on February 5, 1942, to Joseph L. and Caroline M. (Allodi) Calabro, Richard was a twin and the youngest of nine children. He grew up in the Merrymount neighborhood of Quincy, Massachusetts. Richard graduated from Arch Bishop Williams High School in Braintree, MA, in 1959, after which he served in the United States Navy on a destroyer, then entered the seminary for a time. He attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and had a successful, 32-year career as a computer programmer.

Richard married the love of his life, Ingeborg (Himmel) Calabro, in 1977, and she remained his beautiful and devoted wife for 48 years. Richard and Inge spent their early years together on the South Shore of Massachusetts, settling in Walpole and Hull, before retiring to Green Valley, Arizona in 2001. Green Valley became Richard and Inge's home base for many memorable hikes, vacations, and visits with family members and neighbors. There, they basked in colorful sunsets, amidst the saguaro-dotted desert and mountain vistas.

Richard was an open-minded person and a free spirit, who loved to travel and cook. He enjoyed music, a good walk or hike, and a healthy, plant-based diet. He was a steward of the environment, a gentle soul, and a deeply spiritual man who believed much in life was "in God's hands," as he would often say. Though soft-spoken, Richard had a strong character, a winning smile and a hearty, infectious laugh. He was active in the communities where he lived, and present in the many lives of those he loved.

Richard and Inge's love of the desert southwest was evident in their seasonal trips to Sedona and Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ, as well as to the Grand Canyon in Flagstaff. They also enjoyed leisure time in St. Maarten and travels abroad to Europe; most often to Germany, where Ingeborg was born and has family.

Closer to home, Richard was an active member of the Samaritans of Green Valley. In line with his closely held beliefs that we are all God's children, Richard was an immigration rights activist who dedicated countless hours volunteering to provide food, water, and clothing to immigrants in his Arizona community. As a member of the local hiking club, Richard worked on keeping the  trails clean; and was known to pick up trash wherever he went, aptly earning the nickname "Litter Critter." Richard's legacy of good will and service to others will be cherished always.

Richard Calabro leaves behind his beloved wife, Ingeborg Calabro of Green Valley, AZ; and is survived by three of his sisters —Carolyn Mulholland of Breezy Point, NY, and Brockton, MA; Eleanor Sabini of Milton, MA; and his twin, Roberta Vernaglia of Brockton, MA, — as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Richard is predeceased by his parents, Caroline and Joseph, and five siblings: Jeanette Perot, Pauline Anderson, Antoinette Quain, Edward Calabro, and Joseph L. Calabro, Jr.
