IN LOVING MEMORY: Maria da Penha Serafim de Almeida was born in 1930 in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, in a small, rural village near Cachoeiro de Itapemirim. The eldest of 12 siblings, she left home at 18 to pursue her dream of living in the "Big City": Rio de Janeiro. In Rio she soon met and then married Bernard Pascal Tarbutt, a British immigrant. They had a daughter, Veronica Ann, in 1955. The family lived in the neighborhoods of Copacabana and Jardim Botanico, where they were active in the thriving British/Brazilian community of the time and busy with their extended Rio-based family. Bernard died in 1966 after a long battle with cancer. Maria then met The Rev. Derwent A. Suthers (an Episcopal priest affiliated with Rio's Christ Church) and they married in Rio in 1969. Derwent brought his new family to Mill Valley, in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, the following year. During the mid-1970 through the mid-1990s, Derwent's work responsibilities relocated them to Pennsylvania, Georgia, and New York, returning them to Atlanta in 1997. They lived there until 2010 when, with Maria's health already deteriorating, the couple moved to Southern Arizona to be closer to Veronica. Maria was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker who also enjoyed volunteer work for Church-related and animal charities. She also had a passion for interior design and decorating, remodeling their several homes with flair. Maria's vivacity, warm heart and generosity to those less fortunate were admired by all who knew her. "Vai com Deus, Maria!"
