OBITUARY FOR LINN F. AVERILL, JR.

Linn Francis Averill, Jr., died May 19, 2026, at his home in Green Valley, Arizona. He was born in Granite Falls, Minnesota to Linn F.  Averill and Marilyn Jean (Roe) Averill on April 4, 1951. He grew up in Hermosa Beach, California, where he graduated from Mira Costa High School and earned a BA degree in geography from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Linn and Barbara (Hofelman) were married on August 6, 1977, in her hometown of Pipestone, Minn. Married life continued in Marshall and Red Wing, Minnesota, and River Falls, Wisconsin, before they retired in Green Valley, Arizona.

His sense for adventure was lifelong, including vacations with the family through all 48 Lower States, enjoying Hawaii and Alaska with his wife, hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with a close friend, canoeing the Boundary Waters with a lifelong friend,  road tripping in the Western states with his grandson and making numerous trips to three favorite destinations: San Diego, Palm Springs and Las Vegas.

Linn was an exceptional bowler (two 300 games), enjoyed recreational golf (one hole-in-one) and hiking in Madera Canyon. He played baseball through his early 20's (1974 Los Angeles city league champs) and followed most sports. He liked picking fantasy baseball and football teams. He appreciated a wide variety of music and spent hours with Barbara listening to songs while playing Yahtzee and cribbage. He was an aficionado of fine tequila and loved sharing tidbits about its varieties.

He was meticulous about statistics and finances which served him well in all his career positions and as a treasurer and president of his Homeowners Association. His favorite job was at AgriBank in St. Paul, Minn., where he spent 13 years in office services positions. But his best job, he always said, was his post-college gig as a letter carrier for the Post Office in Hermosa Beach.

He battled pancreatic cancer courageously and with the support of his family. He chose to pass at home surrounded by his daughters and wife and hearing the heartfelt messages from friends and family.

Linn is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Erin (Jeremy Bradbury), Ann (Tray Penro), grandson Tyler Veness, extended family members, and many great friends.
