Following a long, debilitating illness, our dear mother, Lena Ann Gallanda (Lee), passed away July 29, 2023, at the home of daughter, Karen Mapes, in Vernon, AZ. She was born on August 3, 1934 in Paterson, New Jersey to Joseph and Lena Villano.

She is survived by her older sister, Carmella Lehocky, and younger sister, Joan LaJoie, both of NJ. Lena graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1952. After high school she worked in a bakery, and later as a dental assistant to Dr. Benjamin Adler, who later became our family dentist.

Mom and Dad met through family friends. They played together as children, rekindled their friendship when Dad returned from the Air Force, and were married April 28, 1957. They had four children, Debbie, Karen, Charles (Chuck) and Judy. Mom and Dad were together until Fred's death in April, 2020 - 63 years. Lee and Fred have 11 grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

A dedicated mother, she and Dad worked tirelessly to raise, feed, and cloth their four children, periodically taking in troubled teen friends. A meticulous homemaker, she maintained a sound budget, from which she squirreled 6.00/week for two piano lessons. Mom and Dad instilled a strong work ethic in each of us, and a desire to serve others.

Fred and Lee owned and operated a home decorating business in New Jersey for about 12 years, and moved to Green Valley AZ in 1982, and Sahuarita in 2001. They enjoyed years of leading church worship, attending Cursio, and performing with their Country Spice, Country Drifters, and Jazz Bands. Lee was Fred's faithful groupee, and music carried them through many years. They spent many summers
camping in the White Mountains and various lakes around Arizona. Nothing delighted Mom more than cooking for her friends and family, and large events.

Mom lived at home for three years after Dad's passing. She relied heavily on her caregivers, and truly came to love them. The family is forever grateful. Mom also relied heavily on her faith. Through difficult times and intense struggles, God carried her, holding her hand to the end.
