Joseph Mack Chesnover passed away Sunday, 02/20/2022 at the Southern Arizona Veterans Hospital Hospice after a brief illness.  He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Wendtland(James) and two granddaughters, Valerie Wendtland and Devon Wendtland.  He is also survived by three sisters, Viola Smith, Anna Acerbis, and Gladys Williams and one brother, Robert(Bobbi, "his favorite sister-in-law") Chesnover and many wonderful nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Chesnover, one brother, Leonard Chesnover, one sister, Jane Bashara, and brothers-in-law Joseph(Joe) Ascerbis, Thomas(Tom) Williams, Paul Smith, and Dan Bashara.  He was married twice and preceded in death by, first, MaryAnn(Meile) Chesnover after 46 years and, second, Barbara(Hoover) Chesnover after 11 years.

Mack, as everyone called him, was born in Baker, Montana on October 26, 1926 and graduated from Baker High School in 1944, after which time he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Occupation Forces in Japan during World War II.  After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Montana for a short time and transferred to Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he studied the Art of Baking.  Putting his education to the test, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 where he continued to ply his trade as a Master Baker until he retired from military service in 1972.  His expertise/skill as a Baker was acknowledged time and again through multiple successful military/civilian facility inspections and his rise to the rank of Master Sergeant.  In addition, he was given teaching responsibility for newly assigned enlisted individuals, as well as, managerial responsibility for the base baking facilities.  He was very proud of his 23 years in service to his country.  Never known to be content to "rest on his laurels", he continued to utilize his Baking skills when, after retiring for the Air Force, he was hired by the Champaign Country Club in Champaign, Illinois where he excelled at providing some of the best pastries for Club members being especially known for his pecan rolls, as well as many other fresh made delights, well into the 1980's at which time he retired for good and moved to Arizona to enjoy the sunshine, mountains, and fresh air.

Mack enjoyed traveling, reading, playing cards, and gardening.  He truly loved and cherished time spent with his family at the many family reunions held throughout the United States and visiting his daughter and grandchildren as often as possible.

Joseph Mack Chesnover's interment will be at the Southern Arizona Veterans Cemetery in Marana, AZ on March 3, 2022 at 10:00am.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Arthritis Foundation.
