Obituary

Rev. John Hofman Jr., 92, of Glendale, AZ, went to be with our Lord March 1 st , 2022. His loving, devoted wife of 67 years, Dorothy, was at his side.

John was born to John and Jennie Hofman, who were part of the large Dutch community in Grand Rapids, MI. He was a 3 lb preemie and remarkably lived.  God had plans for him. He was the youngest of 5 children. He attended Baxter Christian School and after graduation he went on to attend the University of Michigan, studying social work. He then transferred to Calvin College Seminary where he earned his degree. After college, he married his beautiful wife Dorothy in 1954 and they began their ministry of service together. He was ordained in the Christian Reformed Church on Sept. 10, 1962. He served as the pastor of several Christian Reformed Churches: PCR Lynden, WA; Manhattan CRC, MT;  East Leonard CRC, Grand Rapids, MI;  Fort Wingate CRC, NM; Bethel CRC, Lynden, WA; Ridgeview Hills, Littleton, CO; Desert View Community, Tucson, AZ; Highland Hills, Grand Rapids, MI and Faith Community Church, Zillah, WA. He also served as a missionary to Guam in '60-'62. He was a passionate preacher and devoted to the Lord. When living in Arizona they fell in love with the desert southwest and retired in Green Valley, AZ in 1996.

John was happy and loved to tease with everyone, making up nicknames and little sayings. Anyone who knew him will remember his antics and little songs he would sing. He loved to belt out the University of Michigan fight song – The Victors from time to time as he was a 'cheer' leader in college.  He loved living in the West and the great outdoors, God's country. He was a great horseman for many years. He liked riding dirt bikes and his scooter later in retirement. Once he took an amazing trip with his friend in a small plane to Alaska and told many stories about the adventure, such as earnestly praying for an opening in thick, ominous clouds to find a safe landing strip. Tennis also was a great love of his and he excelled in it.

John is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his loving 'Bride' as he would always call her, Dorothy and their 5 children and their spouses,  John Hofman (Lourdes) of NM and Mark Hofman(Catherine) of MT, daughters, Dawn Smallwood ,  and Jennifer Patterson (Thomas) of AZ  and Matthew Hofman (Amy) of MI. He has 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
