Joanie was born on August 29th, 1953 in Ann Arbor, MI and passed away on May 13th, 2026 in Tucson, AZ after a six-month battle with AML. She is survived by her husband William (Bill) Hill and her sisters Ann (Bill) Tarrier, Betty Raab, sister-in-law Mary Lee Smith, her brothers Joe Smith, Vern (Lynn) Smith, Dan Smith, Pat (Deneen) Smith, Russ (Mary Ann) Smith, Jim (Mona) Smith and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Ella May Smith, brother Al Smith, sister-in-law Jane Smith and brother-in-law Chuck Raab.

Joanie was an avid runner. Running many races with Bill including the Smoky Mountain Marathon where they were married. She ran twenty marathons – Boston seven times. Her last marathon was her hardest with Bill by her side trying to beat AML!

After graduating from Eastern Michigan University in 2007, she became a Registered Dietician. In 2008, they relocated to Green Valley, AZ and became very active in several groups, ie: Southern Arizona Roadrunners, Tucson Tri Girls, GVR Hiking Club, GVR Cycling Club and Greater Area Bicycling Association. She was still active in the GV Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers.

She was a role model for the healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise. Always with a kind word and beautiful smile to friends and strangers alike. She was a great gift giver and mentor. She will be missed by all who knew her.
