Jane Nye died on February 27, 2018 in Green Valley Arizona, at the age of 79 after a 1 ½ year-long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a cancer of the blood.

Jane graduated from McKeesport High School near Pittsburgh, PA and was employed for several years by the U.S Atomic Energy Commission's Pittsburgh Naval Reactors Operations Office, where she met her first husband. After the birth of her daughter and a period of six years, she re-entered the workplace at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as an administrator in the Division of Continuing Medical Education.  Several years later, she moved to Boston to assume the position of Assistant to the Executive Director at the Neiman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.  Her career in Boston continued when she was named Editorial Assistant to the Editor of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Called back to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, she assumed the position of Assistant Director of her previous office and subsequently was named Director of the Division of Continuing Medical Education, a position she held for several years ending in her retirement.

In retirement, she and her husband, the Rev. Paul H. Sampsell, opened a bookstore, Brooklyn Bridge Books, in Saxonburg, a western PA town settled by John Roebling, the engineer of Brooklyn Bridge fame. They next opened Writ and Wisdom Books and Church Supplies in the Southwestern PA Lutheran Synod office building in Pittsburgh.  The store closed 7 and ½ years later.  Following the death of her husband in 2001, she was named Hostess of the Lutheran House at Chautauqua in Chautauqua, NY.  She retired from that position in 2008.

Jane served on the boards of Glade Run Lutheran Services, a residential treatment center for children and families in Zelienople, PA, and Lutheran Campus Ministry in Greater Pittsburgh. She co-directed a capital campaign to remodel the campus ministry building, and headed a campaign to purchase new choir robes for the Pittsburgh Compline Choir, a ministry of Lutheran Campus Ministry and First English Evangelical Lutheran Church in downtown Pittsburgh.  Some time after the death of Rev. Sampsell, Jane married Christopher Nye and moved to Sheffield, MA.  In Sheffield, she served a term as a trustee of the Bushnell-Sage Library.

She is survived by husband Christopher Nye of Sheffield, MA; daughter Heidi Louise Hageman Smith (Scott) of Florham Park, NJ and Jonas, PA; granddaughter Cassandra Louise Smith, a student at Bentley University, Waltham, MA; brother Robert C. Pohelia, niece Tracey Pawlowski (Bill), nephew Robert C. Pohelia, Jr., and two grand nephews, all of Ohio. She also is survived by Lisa Sampsell of Tempe, AZ; aunt Deloris Pohelia of Pittsburgh, PA, and adopted son, Arturo Martín, of Bonn, Germany.
