James John Gastelum (JJ) , 90, of Tumacácori, Arizona, hung up his rope and stepped off his saddle for the last time on June 1, 2026.

Born and raised in Southern Arizona, JJ lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and love for his family. Being born in a ranching family he developed a strong work ethic from a young age, that stayed with him throughout his life. He built a respected career as a foreman and transportation employee and was given an award for 30 plus years accident free driving, earning the admiration of coworkers and friends through his reliability, leadership, and commitment to doing things the right way.

While he took great pride in his work, JJ greatest joy was his family. He shared a deep and lasting love with his wife, Jo Ann, and cherished the 45 years they spent together building a life centered on faith, family, and community. He was a devoted family member.

Growing up, JJ was involved in 4-H, where he earned recognition by raising and showing a prize-winning steer. His love for the cowboy way of life continued for many years as he traveled throughout Arizona and New Mexico with the kids, competing in Arizona Junior Rodeo Association (AJRA) events. JJ participated in team roping competitions and brought home several notable buckles.

Athletics also played an important role in his life. While attending Nogales High School, JJ helped lead the baseball team to three state championships. Years later, his accomplishments and contributions were honored with his induction into the Nogales High School Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Anita; his father, Jim; his son, Tony; his daughter, Therese; and his sister, Bertha.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann; his children and extended family including, Sandy Gastelum, Liz Roush, Zellie Ybarra, Will (Veronika) Ybarra, Rebecca Miller, Jamie Bermudez (Kyle), Cheyenne Bermudez, William Roush (Tahnee), Austin Roush (Lauren), Andrew Roush (Caitlyn), and Matthew Roush (Jocelynn). He was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren, brother, Albert Gastelum, sister, Shirley Crew (Mike), as well as nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.

JJ's legacy is one of dedication, perseverance, and love. The lessons he taught through his example, showing up, working hard, caring for family, and keeping your word will continue to live on through the generations he leaves behind.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew him.
