Jacob Peter (Jake) Van Alphen, resident of Green Valley  passed away in his home on July 5th at the age of 91. He was born in 1927 on Staten Island, NY, the son of the late Jacob and Rose Van Alphen. He and his late wife, Barbara, moved from Staten Island to Pomona, NY where he worked as a building inspector for the town.  He served in the Navy during WWII, stationed in Jacksonville, FL. He was a member of the Bricklayers Union, and president of Van Alphen Bros. Masonry and General Contracting, which he began in the 1950's with his late brother Peter Van Alphen. In this role he designed custom homes and commercial buildings, including the main Post Office for the borough, a school, and several churches.  His company acted as general contractor on these projects.

He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, having been initiated, passed and raised in Beacon Light Lodge #701 in Staten Island, and after moving to Green Valley he became an active member of Green Valley Lodge #71.  He designed their new lodge on La Cañada Drive where he is honored on the dedication plaque as "Overseer of the Work."

Jake was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years.

He was an avid motorcycle rider for many years, belonging to the Ramapo Motorcycle Club in New York Club while living in Pomona, and he and his wife Barbara traveled many places on his bike.  For a number of years he volunteered at the White Elephant Thrift Store in Green Valley. Jake was an avid painter, working mostly in oils and donated many of his paintings to the White Elephant.

Jacob was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Barbara (July 2018), his brothers Peter and Robert Van Alphen, and his son William.  He is survived by three daughters, Carol Van Alphen, Patricia Donnelly and Lynn Brown, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
