Edwin Eugene Smith, 90, former long-time resident of Union Springs, NY, passed away in hospice in Tucson, Arizona, after a brief battle with cancer, on January 15th, 2025. He was born to the late Andrew J. and Ida F. Smith in Auburn, NY on June 21st, 1934. He was a proud member of the Union Springs Central School Class of 1952, then a graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA, in 1956. After service in the U.S. Army from 1958-1969, including a year in Vietnam, he returned to Union Springs to raise his family. He moved to Rochester, NY in 1990 where he and his wife, the late Kim Y.H. Smith, owned and ran a small business for 10 years before retiring to Green Valley in southern Arizona in 2000. He was delighted to find several childhood friends and classmates already in the area, and he made many more friends during his 24 years in Arizona, quickly putting down roots in the tight-knit Green Valley churches, neighborhood, and karaoke communities, while also maintaining his memberships in the Union Springs American Legion and the Masons. Ed was noted for his keen memory. Many people remarked on how they would off-handedly share some small personal detail with him, and how amazed they were later when he would refer back to it. Ed was an avid reader of biography and history, which was also reflected in his time as a volunteer docent at the Titan Missile Museum. Ed loved sports, especially football and basketball, and socializing with his friends and neighbors, always having a friendly wave and cheerful greeting for everyone.

Survivors include his son Allan Smith (Miyuki) and daughter Frances Marchand (Charles), his brother Art (Connie), and grandchildren Samantha and Hayley Marchand, and Jonathan and Benjamin Smith, and several nephews and nieces.

Our souls are weary with sorrow, but are strengthened knowing that our gentle Ed lived a long life filled with family and many, many friends. Ed's family is especially grateful for all the love and care these friends gave him. Ed had a personal attachment with each of us in his family. He had good values, never complained, and was a good man trying to live his life with God, community and family in the forefront. The family is grateful for having Ed in our lives and for the care given him by the Veterans Administration's hospital and hospice in Tucson.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the Santa Rita Fire District EMS Department, or to the Elks Club Scholarship Fund.

Services will be on February 16th at 1PM, at the Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 S. Camino Del Sol, Green Valley, AZ.
