Dorothy Louise
Hofman
d. Oct 26, 2024
Dorothy Louise Hofman (DeYoung), 94 of Glendale, AZ, went to be with our Lord on October 26, 2024, with family by her side. Her parents were Adrian and Katherine DeYoung of Grand Rapids, MI. She had a twin sister, Betty, and 3 brothers, Harold, Edward, and Robert. Her parents emigrated from the Netherlands; her father's family in 1904 and her mother's family in 1870.
After graduation from Central High School, Dorothy went on to attend The Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing in Grand Rapids, MI earning her Registered Nursing degree. While there, she met her husband, John Hofman Jr., who was driving an ambulance at the time. They married in 1954. Her husband later became a Christian Reformed Church pastor, and they began their service of ministry together. Dorothy continued nursing and worked in hospitals and nursing homes for forty years while raising their 5 children. She was an excellent, caring, and compassionate nurse. Dorothy, lovingly called Dot or Dottie by her friends and family, was a smart lady and well loved by everyone she met.
Being a dedicated pastor's wife took her to many places in the states and abroad. Dot and John traveled to serve in churches in MI, WA, MT, NM, CO, AZ, Guam, and Nova Scotia. She fell in love with the desert southwest and they retired in Green Valley, AZ in 1996. She was an accomplished oil painter and depicted the beauty of the west in her stunning landscape paintings and stills. Dot also loved to bake and was known for her amazing cinnamon rolls and coffee cakes she made weekly. They were an anticipated delight for friends and family. Dot was a classy, well dressed lady and a talented seamstress. Dorothy loved flowers and grew beautiful roses, dahlias, tulips and irises.
Dot will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her siblings.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses: John and Des Hofman III of NM, Mark and Katie Hofman of MT, Dawn Smallwood of AZ, Jennifer and Tom Patterson of AZ, and Matthew and Amy Hofman of MI. She had 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-greatgrandchildren. She loved them all dearly.
A celebration of life will be held at Inspira in Glendale, AZ on Tuesday, November 12th @ 11 am. Graveside services will be held at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery on Wednesday, November 13th @ 11 am.
