Donald (Don) Van Hoy Foster died peacefully on February 16, 2016 in Green Valley, AZ at the age of 93

Don is survived by his sister June Daue, his dear friend and companion Joan Hull, and a host of nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years Frances Helen Foster (nee Russell), his father Nelson H. Foster and mother Mary V. Foster (nee Bennett), three brothers Theodore, Dudley, and Jack, and three sisters Virginia Rutherford, Nelsa Hodgson, and Claire Kramer.

Don was born on October 28, 1922 in Annapolis Maryland. The family later moved to Baltimore Maryland, where he attended Baltimore City College. Don married his sweetheart Fran in 1942 and the same year joined the US Army at the start of WWII.  Don loved military life and after a short time as a civilian reenlisted in the Army where he went on to serve in both the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. During his Army career he and Fran would live in Washington D.C., Turkey, Japan and Hawaii. He retired from the military with more than 20 years of service. In the early 1980's Don and Fran moved to Sierra Vista, AZ where he worked in communications for the Department of Defense at Fort Huachaca. After retiring from Civil Service, Don and his wife moved back to Maryland to be near their families.  After Fran's death Don returned to Arizona living in Sierra Vista and then Green Valley.

All who knew Don knew of is joking nature. There was nothing he loved more than bantering with friends and family, trying to get the last word in and the funniest line.   Don was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge #2592 and was a former Exalted Ruler at Lodge #616 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Don held a variety of offices in the ELK local and national organizations. He was a member VFW Post #9977 and the American legion Post #131. Don lived a long prosperous life and was very proud of his independence.

A funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Annapolis in the near future. If you would like to memorialize Don please send donations to your favorite veteran's charity in honor of him.  The family would like to thank the caregivers at the VA hospital in Tucson, the Santa Rita Rehabilitation Center, the Green Valley Hospital (especially the Comfort Care Unit) and the staff at The Peaks.
